Writers don’t write from experience, though many are resistant to admit that they don’t. I want to be clear about this. If you wrote from experience, you’d get maybe one book, maybe three poems. Writers write from empathy.

duh, we’re authors, not mathmagicians.

please tell me that’s not a typo

It’s probably not because a quick google tells me that mathemagicians are real things

but when i saw that word the first thing i thought of was The Phantom Tollbooth and i really hope that was a reference

I’m not going to write up a ‘Best Stories You’ve Never Heard’ thing today, quite frankly because I’m too lazy to pick a story and put the work into it just right now and I want to spend all day playing a video game

but I WILL write up a little informative piece, for everyone who wasn’t around back when I started this series at the end of November (because wow it’s been that long?)

Every Friday, I try to highlight one story that I love, for any of various of reasons, that I think hasn’t gotten the recognition it deserves. These stories can be books, movies, video games, television series, anything, as long as there’s a narrative, and I feel like it’s relatively obscure, or known to  only a few people.

I’ll give a short summary of the story as well as my personal experiences with it (how I found it, my opinions), and sometimes quotes/excerpts and spoilers on the ending. All of these can be found under a link in my sidebar, and they’re all tagged ‘#bsynh

I’m doing this for no reason other than to hopefully expose people to different stories that I think they might otherwise have never come into contact with. I am a lover of fiction of all types, and certain experiences in my young life have highlighted just how easy it is for certain pieces of fiction to disappear from public knowledge despite how great they were.

I’m also taking suggestions, as I definitely don’t know every good story in the world. If you know of a story, done in any medium, that you think is very good but that very few people seem to know about it, you can leave it as a reply to this post or in my askbox, and I’ll check it out.

30 Day OTP Writing Challenge

Day 2 - Cuddling Somewhere (Jade/Dave)

author’s note: this fic is inspired by this print from WhatPumpkin, which I have in a frame above my bed and can see while writing through my closet mirror

Dave had the volume on his music player turned down low enough to hear when Jade yawned somewhere nearby. He instinctively reached out, eyes still closed from a nap, and felt her elbow, and realized she must have turned towards him during her own nap. “Hey,” he mumbled, still feeling drowsy, “you awake?”

“Nope,” Jade mumbled back, a lilt in her voice from a suppressed giggle. The grass rustled as she turned onto her side, closer to Dave. “Still asleep. Gotta get my twenty hours in.” The corner of Dave’s mouth turned up.

“Actually we’re all still awake,” Rose said, from the other direction, “and some of us are trying to read.” Dave considered a retort but he could hear the smile in her voice and decided to ignore her, opting instead to shift closer towards Jade. His arm hit a piece of stiff cardboard on the way though, and it took him a moment, eyes still closed, to remember the chessboard that hadn’t been moved.

The plastic pieces clattered off as he lifted the board gently up over his head. “Here,” he said, “be useful,” and dropped the board about where he figured Rose was lying. Obstacle removed, he rolled onto his side and reached out again, feeling for Jade’s hand. She had rolled onto her back again while he had been distracted, but was close enough for Dave to quickly cuddle up next to, sliding an arm over hers across her stomach and interlocking their fingers together. With a sigh of content Dave rested his forehead on Jade’s shoulder, and a moment later he felt her slowly pull the forgotten shades out of his hair and settle them into place over her own eyes.

“The sun keeps moving,” she explained with another yawn.

“Hey Jade?” John whispered, lying somewhere else in the grass circle. “I’m putting your glasses on Rose’s yarn-bag, so I don’t accidentally hit them, OK?” Jade just made a ‘mmhmm’ sound in response, and settled closer to Dave.

the most important thing is to make sure I get the daily fics in according to my timezone right?

because today’s prompt was ‘cuddling’ and like wow what’s more difficult to write a fic about something you know nothing about or a cuddlefic that is so adorable it makes you want to stop and squee after every sentence?

30 Day OTP Writing Challenge

Day 1 - Holding Hands (Bolitz)

“That was officially the best Hot Pot place I have ever been,” Glitz said to Bolin with a content sigh as the pair stepped out into the sunlight.

“Right? I know all the best places to eat in the city. And,” he added, eyeing the city park down the street, “we still have an hour before you have to leave, so….”

Glitz grinned as his voice trailed off. “You want to take a walk through the park?” she asked.

Bolin looked slightly embarrassed. “It’s what people on dates do, right?” Glitz smiled wider and reached down to take his hand.

“Of course,” she replied, “there should be a proper walk in the park every so often for any dating couple, especially when there’s such a nice park so close by.” Bolin smiled back and squeezed her hand.

“The only proper way to respond to being on a date with a park nearby,” he said in a mock upper-class voice.

They laughed as they walked, hand in hand, towards the city park. “We’ve never actually done a walk through the park,” Bolin noted as they passed the line of green grass and foliage.

“Probably because we’re silly,” Glitz said. “This is obviously the best way to end every lunch date.”

“Obviously,” Bolin repeated. The quacking of some nearby turtle-ducks caught his attention, and he noticed one of the city park’s many small ponds a little off the main walkway. “Hey,” he said, “you wanna see a trick?”

“Does it mean having to give you your hand back?” Glitz asked, and held their still-clasped hands up.

“Unfortunately yes,” Bolin said. “I know it’ll be tough, but I believe in you.”

Glitz sighed dramatically and then nodded. “Alright,” she said, “but make it quick - I want you hand back soon.”

Ooh, so apparently Camp NaNoWriMo begins today and I wasn’t planning on doing it, but I haven’t been writing very much lately, and I feel like I need to fix that, so instead I want to do a 30 Day Writing Challenge and see if I can finish by the end of the month

but I’m not sure which challenge to use? Mariana just started an OTP challenge which looks good - I could write thirty short drabbles for various ships of mine - but there are also other writing challenges I could do, can someone suggest others for me? And maybe give me some links?

Gift-fic for Glitteringworlds! Also works perfectly as a late Valentine’s gift.

Bolin and Glitz spend a leisurely afternoon at the Republic City Park.

Things I did while preparing to write/writing this fic:

  • Rewatched all of LoK
  • Blogged for like a full week about trying to write fluff
  • Stalked Glitz’ ‘Bolin’ and ‘LoK’ tags, as well as kept those two asks you published once about ‘how would you write me’ in my bookmarks
  • Kept the above gif open in a separate tag for easy referral
  • Learned a lot of random new things I didn’t know about Avatar Universe

Things that were going to be in this fic but ended up not:

  • Some random plot about finding a kitten and returning it to its owner. Like I was pretty much working on that until Thursday morning when I decided to scrap that and redo the whole thing and it game out pretty good imho
  • Pabu. I didn’t even realize until editing that I never mentioned Pabu. Sorry Pabu ilu anyways
  • Glitz serenading Bolin at one point - didn’t use because I couldn’t think of a song that would make sense in Avatar Universe.
  • Walking hand in hand through the park, which was a mental image I kept going back to but never really fit in with the action.

“THIS IS SO CUTE” the fanfic writer says excitedly, alone in her room, before starting to worry if her readers would think it cute as well.

Writing question! Is there a way to denote in a narrative when a character goes ‘shifty-eyed’? Like, say character A calls character B out on something, and character B does a comical ‘look in both directions really quickly without turning head, pretending to be innocent’ thing. Is there a good narrative way to say this without saying “[character B] went shifty-eyed, looking anywhere but at [character A]”?

“Why am I so much more creative when I’m tired?”

martwhim:

This also translates into:

  • “Why am I so motivated when it’s really late?”
  • “The best time to make ideas is through sleep deprivation!”
  • “I want to do so much more right before bed and I don’t understand why!”
  • etc.

So basically when you stay up way too late it effects your problem solving ability and your ability to make decisions. [1]

Do you want to know a possible reason as to why that “I stayed up really late and now I feel so creative and willing to draw!” feeling happens?  Because your self-critique center is shutting down because you’ve been awake for too long.

You are always as creative and able to do things as you were when you were awake.  That potential doesn’t just disappear.

Difference is— when you’re wide awake you have a stronger problem-solving and decision-making center, which is obviously related to self-critique.  Being tired doesn’t necessarily make you more creative and motivated, being tired forces you to quiet that part of yourself that holds you back.

Something to think about.

I found the lack of Community/Inception crossover fics disturbing - so I decided to take the matter into my own hands!

Conclusion, posted on AO3 (but also under the cut below).

Crossover Community/Inception AU, where Greendale Community College is really a shared dreamworld, and a team of professionals have been hired by Hawthorne Industries to subtly convince the heir to the Winger Empire to dissolve his company. As a reward for success, team leader Abed Nadir is finally able to return to his family.

This is specifically a rewrite of the last scenes of Inception, with the Inception cast replaced with Community cast. It may seem a bit OOC since I am literally just rewriting the original scene, not changing the characters to be more like their Community counterparts.

(Originally this idea was an alt-Season 2 ending. While watching season 2 I was surprised by how many Inception jokes they were making, and I joked that at the end of the season we would realize Greendale wasn’t even real and it was all a ‘dream within a dream within a movie’. But then the AU started to form itself, and all the characters matched up perfectly, and I realized this was something that had to be done.

Abed is replacing Cobb (because of his obsession with meta and his own battle between real and not-real), Pierce replaces Saito, Jeff replaces Fischer, Troy replaces Arthur, Britta replaces Ariadne, Annie replaces Yusuf, and Shirley replaces Eames.

It may read better if you watch the original scene here first, but maybe not, it’s your choice.)
